Frequently asked questions

About Decal

What Decal is, who it's for, and the company behind it.

What is Decal?

Decal is a commerce platform for small businesses and solo entrepreneurs that combines payments, online bookings, prepaid packages and memberships, and a treasury account that earns interest on idle balances. It runs on stablecoin rails, which is why it costs a fraction of what traditional payment processors and booking tools charge. Decal works alongside Square or on its own. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Who is Decal for?

Decal is built for any small business or solopreneur - personal trainers, hair stylists and barbers, estheticians, massage therapists, yoga and fitness studios, tutors, dog walkers, photographers, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, and other independent operators who take payments and often book appointments. If you're paying a monthly software subscription plus 2.5 - 3.0% on every card swipe, Decal was designed for you.

Who is behind Decal?

Decal is built by Decal Labs, Inc., co-founded by Josh Fried and Nick Frostbutter. Since 2025, Decal has processed over $4.1 million across more than 42,000 payments.

Is Decal a bank?

No. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Do I or my customers need to understand crypto or stablecoin rails to use Decal?

No. Decal handles the stablecoin infrastructure behind the scenes. Merchants see dollar amounts in a normal dashboard, and customers pay with a card, a prepaid balance, or stablecoins - online via normal checkout flows or in-person via QR code. Decal covers all network ("gas") fees, so nobody has to buy or manage tokens to transact.

Pricing and fees

How much does Decal cost?

Decal starts at $49 per month. Payments made with stablecoins or from a customer's prepaid balance cost about 1% all-in. Card payments are free for your first three months, then 2.8% + $0.10. There is no hardware to buy.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. Decal has no setup fee, no hardware cost, no chargeback fees on stablecoin or prepaid-balance payments, and no fee when a customer redeems a prepaid balance. Payout fees to bank accounts are subject to Decal's partner processing fees, which vary by country and payout method.

What does "~1% all-in" mean?

It means the total cost to accept a stablecoin or prepaid-balance payment on Decal is about one percent of the transaction, with no separate per-transaction fixed fee, network fee, or interchange. On a $5 coffee, traditional card processing (2.9% + 30¢) costs about 45¢; Decal costs about 5¢.

Is there really 0% card processing for three months?

Yes. New Decal merchants pay 0% on card processing for their first three months. After three months, merchants pay 2.8% + $0.10.

Is Decal cheaper than Square?

For most small service businesses, yes. Square Appointments charges $0, $49, or $149 per month per location plus 2.4 - 2.6% + 15¢ on in-person card payments (Square pricing, September 2026). Decal costs $49 per month (unlimited locations) and charges about 1% on stablecoin and prepaid-balance payments, with 0% on cards for the first three months. Your idle balance also earns interest through Decal; Square does not offer this. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Is Decal cheaper than Mindbody?

Mindbody costs $79 - $450 per month with payment processing priced separately by plan (Mindbody pricing, September 2026). Decal costs $49 per month (unlimited locations) and charges about 1% on stablecoin and prepaid-balance payments, with 0% on cards for the first three months. Your idle balance also earns interest through Decal; MindBody does not offer this. For a solo practitioner or a studio with a handful of instructors, the difference is typically thousands of dollars per year. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Payments and settlement

How do customers pay with Decal?

Customers pay the way they already do: with a credit or debit card, from a prepaid balance they hold with your business, or with stablecoins - online via normal checkout flows or in-person via QR code. There's no app to download. All a user needs is a computer or phone, and an internet browser.

How fast do I get paid?

Stablecoin and prepaid-balance payments settle to your Decal account in seconds, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and bank holidays. Moving money from Decal to your bank account takes 1-2 business days and follows normal banking hours.

Does Decal work on weekends and holidays?

Yes. Because stablecoin payments settle on blockchains rather than through the card networks, Decal processes and settles payments 24/7. So your Decal Treasury balance is always earning rewards. Payouts to a traditional bank account still follow banking schedules. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

What about chargebacks and disputes?

Stablecoin and prepaid-balance payments on Decal are final at confirmation, so there are no chargebacks on them. Card payments processed through Decal carry standard card-network dispute rules.

Can I issue refunds?

Yes. Decal merchants issue refunds as credit back to the customer's balance, which costs you nothing in processing fees.

Do customers need a Decal account?

Not for a card or stablecoin payment. Customers create a lightweight Decal profile only when they want to hold a prepaid balance with your business or book appointments, so their credits and upcoming sessions are saved.

Bookings

How clients book and pay online, and how scheduling, reminders, cancellations, and refunds work.

What is Decal Bookings?

Decal Bookings is appointment and class scheduling with payments built in. You define your services once - appointments, classes, consultations, workshops, packages - and Decal turns them into bookable time slots your clients reserve and pay for themselves. Bookings, payments, and prepaid balances all live in one system, so there's no separate scheduling app to sync.

Can clients book more than one service and pay for other products in a single checkout?

Yes. A client can book multiple services - a cut and a color, three training sessions, a class plus a bottle of water - and pay for everything together. That's one checkout flow, and one payment - which means one processing fee instead of several.

How does Decal prevent double-booking?

You set your working hours and Decal generates the available slots. You can add buffer time between appointments, require minimum notice, and limit how far in advance clients can book. A slot is held (for 10 minutes) the moment a client selects it, so two clients can't reserve the same time.

Does Decal support group classes and events?

Yes. Decal Bookings handles one-on-one appointments and group formats like classes, bootcamps, and workshops, with capacity limits per session. You can offer flexible time windows or fixed start times.

What happens when a client reschedules or cancels?

When plans change, the client's payment becomes a credit on their prepaid balance with your business instead of a card refund. You keep the revenue, the client keeps the value, and you avoid paying a second processing fee.

Does Decal Bookings integrate with Square Appointments?

Not currently. Decal's Square integration today covers payments and prepaid balances on Square devices. Decal Bookings runs as its own booking page and works alongside your Square setup. If this integration is of interest to you, please let us know.

What is online appointment scheduling software?

Online appointment scheduling software allows clients to see your open times and book - and often pay - online, instead of calling or messaging you. Decal adds payments, reminders, and customer records to the same calendar.

How do clients book appointments online with Decal?

Clients open your booking page, choose a service or class, select a time, and check out. Checking out as a "guest" requires only a name and email. A Decal account is needed to manage existing client bookings.

Does Decal send appointment reminders?

Yes. Clients get automated confirmation emails and reminders - with "Add to Calendar" links - 7 days, 1 day, and 1 hour before an appointment, all sent under your business name with your branding included.

Can I set business hours, holidays, and booking limits?

Yes, merchants can set hours for each location, close for holidays or date ranges (with a customer-facing note indicating why), and control the minimum notice and how far ahead clients can book.

Prepaid packages, memberships, and stored value

What are prepaid packages and memberships on Decal?

Prepaid packages and memberships let customers load money onto a balance with your business - such as a 10-session pack, a monthly membership, or a $100 reload - and spend it down over time. You collect the revenue up front, redemptions carry zero processing fees, and the balance earns interest in your Decal Treasury while it waits to be spent. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Why would a customer prepay?

Because you can offer a bonus funded by interest rather than your margin - for example, "load $100, get $110 to spend." Customers get more value, you get cash up front and a client who has committed to coming back, and Decal Treasury prevents the bonus from eroding your margins. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Is a Decal prepaid balance the same as a gift card?

It's similar, but better on economics. A traditional gift-card program charges 2 - 5% in fees, and the idle balance earns nothing. On Decal, redemptions cost 0% in processing and the outstanding balance earns interest in your Treasury. Balances can also be used for bookings and can receive cancellation credits. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Do prepaid balances expire?

No.

Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Compatibility and setup

Does Decal work with Square?

Yes. Decal layers on top of every Square device for payments and prepaid balances - no new hardware, no retraining your staff. You can keep your Square setup and add Decal, or run Decal on its own. Clover, Lightspeed, and Shopify integrations are coming soon.

Can I use Decal without a point-of-sale system?

Yes. Decal runs standalone: your booking page, payment links, and customer balances need nothing else.

How long does it take to set up Decal?

It takes about 10 minutes to set up Decal. Connect your Square account (or skip it), complete guided onboarding, add your services, and you're live. You can start with payments and prepaid balances and turn on Treasury and Bookings whenever you're ready.

Do I need new hardware?

No. Decal works with the Square devices you already have, or with no hardware at all, by offering merchants customizable booking pages, fully hosted checkout pages, hosted payment links, and QR codes.

What do I need to sign up?

It depends on your requirements as a merchant. If you only need stablecoin payments, Decal collects minimum info and you can be up and running immediately.

If you need card payments or bank account payouts, Decal's partners require standard business compliance (KYB & AML) checks; this means we'll need information such as your legal business name, EIN or SSN, a bank account for payouts, a government ID for identity verification, and your Square account information (if you're integrating one).

Is Decal available outside the United States?

Yes, the Decal platform is accessible and available everywhere. Offering more than stablecoin payments - such as card payments and money movement - is subject to local jurisdictions and our banking partner requirements.

Stablecoins, security, and the technology

What are stablecoins, and why does Decal use them?

Stablecoins are digital dollars - tokens issued by companies like Circle (USDC) and PayPal (PYUSD) that are backed one-to-one by US dollars and dollar equivalents. Decal uses them because they settle in seconds, cost almost nothing to move, work 24/7, and earn interest natively. That's what lets Decal offer payment processing at about 1% and pay you interest on your balance. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Which stablecoins and blockchain does Decal support?

Decal runs on the Solana blockchain and supports many stablecoins and wallets. Merchants never need to choose a token - Decal's Smart Payments picks the best route automatically.

Do I receive stablecoins or dollars?

You see dollars. Your Decal dashboard shows balances, sales, and payouts in USD, and payouts to your bank arrive as dollars. Under the hood, funds are held as US-dollar stablecoins, which is what allows instant settlement and interest. Decal is a financial technology company, not a bank. Yield generated through Decal Treasury is produced through managed strategies and is not guaranteed. Funds are not FDIC-insured.

Is Decal secure? Is it PCI compliant?

Card payments are processed by a PCI DSS Level 1 certified partner; Decal never stores full card numbers. Stablecoin transactions are settled on the Solana blockchain and are final at confirmation.
